First Digital Story Reflection

I could use this format in many other classes to help me succeed. Also, it would add some variety to how I present my projects. I enjoyed researching about the things I would love to do before I die. The thing that I found difficult about this project was recording my own voice. Yes I definitely do see my doing this for my personal use.

Citing Sources

I like Citation Machine better than EasyBib for many reasons. One, I have worked with Citation Machine and am more familiar with the website. Also, i liked the way Citation Machine fills in more information than EasyBib. I felt there was more work involved in EasyBib than Citation Machine.

Timeline

Theodore Roosevelt Articles

1. In all three sources it talks about Roosevelt’s son Kermit and their father-son expedition across the River of Doubt. Also, all sources talk about the dangers they faced on the journey. In addition, all three articles said that Theodore suffered from depression and he went down to visit his son Kermit to escape political problems.
2. In the first two articles it said that both Theodore and Kermit made the expedition but in the last article it says that Kermit ending up committing suicide. Also, in the first two articles it said that Theodore’s decision to abandon the Republican Party and run as a Progressive had been bitterly criticized and caused many problems for him.
3. In the first article it talks about how Theodore Roosevelt carried a lethal dose of morphine with him for many years. Also, it said that Theodore though about taking his own life. It did not say this in any other article. I think this is a very good possibility that Theodore thought about taking his own life because of all of the troubles and diseases he went through on his journey. I could verify the validity by going on several more websites to confirm these facts.

Site Evaluations

http://www.prodeathpenalty.com/, http://usliberals.about.com/od/deathpenalty/i/DeathPenalty.htm, and http://www.amnesty.org/en/death-penalty were all reliable. Although http://www.prodeathpenalty.com/ and http://www.amnest.org/ were biased/slanted they were still very reliable on the topic they stated at the begining. Also for all of the websites that were reliabled, the author and the credentials were clearly stated. On the other hand, http://www.kkk.org/ was not reliable; the author was not stated, and it was very biased. Also, when I clicked on the link only pictures showed up, with no words.I am not sure if there was a networking problem or if the website just had pictures. But as I went to different parts of the site there were words, but still not reliable, therefore I found that http://www.kkk.org/ was not reliable.

Online Safety

In this article, it tells a story about a kid named Ryan Halican who took his own life because the bullying got so bad. It all began in 5th grade, not online bullying yet, but verbal assaults. His parents told him to ignore them and just walk away. This continued until about 8th grade summer when they started bullying him online through AOL instant messaging. Pretty girls would message him saying embarrassing stuff acting like they were attracted to him. The girls would laugh amongst themselves at Ryan's expense. Also the girls copied and pasted there private message exchanges and posted them into other conversations with her friends. During the summer of 2003 was when Ryan took his own life because he just could handle the bullying and antagonizing at home through the internet.

Google

As of March 1, 2012 Google will be collecting data about the user from their YouTube searches, Gmail, and Google+ to tailer your search results and have more ads that you are "interested in" depending on what you search. Also, you will be able to move across Gmail, Calendar, Search, YouTube, or whatever your life calls for with ease. Another difference is that when you share a document, Google will remember contact information of the people you share it with to minimize the amount of clicks it take to share with that person the next time.

In the article it says that Google will merge data from the products you use and the analyze it to make new assumptions. If you have an Android phone Google already knows your location. If you put your appointments in a Google calendar it also knows where you are going and what time. "That's not something I want my computer telling me. It's creepy," said Kurt Opsahl.

I agree with Kurt Opsahl that what Google will now be able to do is kind of creepy and unsettling. The thought of someone knowing where I am and where I will be going scares me. I think Google is getting way too involved in the users' life. I mean how easy is it to access what Google knows? Some creep could track you down by all of the information Google stores.

Copyright Infringement Case

The Avril Lavigne vs. The Rubinoos case involved the songs "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by the Rubinoos. In 2007, The Rubinoos' frontman Tommy Dunbar and co-writer James Gangwer filed suit in U.S. District Court in Northern California against Lavigne, Dr. Luke, RCA records, and Apple Inc. Dunbar said in a statment, "We are not so naive as to chalk it up to some sort of cosmic coincidence, the lyric, the meter, the rhythm...they're identical." In 2008, the case was settled out of court, but Avril Lavigne still claims to be falsely accused.

Internet Safety

Internet Safety is the security of people and their information when using the Internet. I think one of the most important things to remember is if you would not say it in person, do not say it online. Many people get bullied over the Internet and some even take their lives because the cyberbullying gets so bad. Another thing to remember is to never give out personal information. Even just telling someone your name and number, they can use the area code from your number to help track you down. Finally, always remember people are not always who or what they say they are online. A 53 year old man could be posing as a 14 year old boy and try to get information on little girls. Two things I could improve would be to think about every possible way a message could be taken, even if it is a joke some people may not consider it funny, take it in a serious way, and become offended. Another thing I could do is not accept people's friend requests on Facebook if I do not know them personally. Remember, you can never be TOO safe.

Feed Readers

Over the past two days I have worked with both Google Reader and Bloglines. Personally, I feel Google Reader is more convenient to me for many reasons. First of all, Google Reader has much easier access through my iGoogle page. Also, I feel it is easier to subscribe to websites through Google Reader. When you search for a feed to subscribe to, there is a wider choice of options to choose from than on Bloglines. In addition, I love the way Google Reader is set up much more than Bloglines. On Google Reader, it shows pictures and a preview of each atom on the feed. On Bloglines, you have to open each one to see what each is about.
